International Day of Forests
On March 21, the world celebrated the International Day of Forests. This year’s theme was “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.” Forests cover one-third of the Earth’s surface, accounting for approximately 4 billion hectares of forest ecosystems. They provide habitats for most of the planet’s species and serve as a lifeline for nearly 1 billion people.
Encouraging the implementation of innovative processes to protect forested areas is one of the key objectives for the coming years. Projects such as innovative forest monitoring and the study of trees’ chemical properties to improve human health are just two examples of how innovation and sustainability can work together to protect our forests.

Tonelería Murúa cuida los bosques cuidando el proceso y la trazabilidad de la madera que necesitamos para crear nuestras barricas. Creemos en la sostenibilidad como condición imprescindible para garantizar la materia prima. Por eso, exigimos que la gestión del bosque sea sostenible mediante el total cumplimiento de la normativa medioambiental vigente por parte de nuestros proveedores.
Tonelería Murúa mira tanto a bosques europeos como americanos para encontrar la mejor madera para las barricas. Tenemos en cuenta el tipo de madera, el lugar donde crece, pero también es fundamental garantizar la trazabilidad de la madera, primero, y de las barricas, después, para asegurar que se realiza un proceso respetuoso y sostenible con el propio bosque.

En 1920, Tonelería Murúa incorpora maquinaria moderna dejando atrás una manera de fabricar artesana. Cien años después, construimos las nuevas instalaciones de Navarrete, una tonelería con la maquinaria más moderna y una construcción eficiente energéticamente. Además, el diseño de esta nueva fábrica se presentó en la Bienal de Venecia del año pasado como todo un ejemplo de diseño y planta productiva eficiente y ecológica.

En Tonelería Murúa llevamos un control de consumo de nuestra energía, nuestra maquinaria es eficiente, buscamos el residuo cero y las barricas son sometidas a una trazabilidad total que es un paso más en la cadena de custodia y compromiso ambiental contra el cambio climático.
Nuestra filosofía de innovación constante también mira al cielo. Al sol y a su energía, concretamente. Las 282 placas solares para autoconsumo hacen que la empresa tenga un alto porcentaje de autosuficiencia de consumo energético. Al año, gracias a este método, conseguimos reducir las emisiones anuales de CO2 a 60 toneladas.
Además, ya no usamos gasoil. Parte de los residuos de madera generados durante el proceso de fabricación de barricas se aprovechan en una caldera de biomasa que transforma la madera en energía calorífica.

Tonelería Murúa protects forests by ensuring the careful management and traceability of the wood used to craft our barrels. We believe that sustainability is essential to guaranteeing the availability of high-quality raw materials. That is why we demand sustainable forest management from our suppliers, requiring full compliance with current environmental regulations.
Tonelería Murúa sources wood from both European and American forests to find the best material for barrel production. We consider the type of wood and the region where it grows, but it is equally important to guarantee the traceability of the wood first, and then the barrels, ensuring that the entire process is responsible and sustainable for the forests themselves.

In 1920, Tonelería Murúa introduced modern machinery, moving away from purely artisanal manufacturing. A century later, we built our state-of-the-art cooperage in Navarrete, featuring the most advanced equipment and an energy-efficient design. The architectural design of this new factory was even showcased at the Venice Biennale last year as an exemplary model of efficient and eco-friendly industrial design.

Energy consumption is closely monitored, our machinery is highly efficient, we work towards zero waste, and our barrels undergo comprehensive traceability, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.
Harnessing Solar Energy for a Sustainable Future
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond our production line—we look to the sky for solutions. Specifically, to the sun. Our 282 solar panels provide self-sufficient energy, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Thanks to this initiative, we successfully cut annual CO₂ emissions by 60 tons.
Additionally, we no longer use diesel fuel. Instead, part of the wood waste generated during barrel production is repurposed in a biomass boiler, which converts the wood into thermal energy, further reducing our environmental impact.
