Since 1898, our legacy has been passed down from generation to generation. Our knowledge and experience in the industry are deeply connected to our passion for the craft—a trade where tradition and innovation come together to create the barrels that will house our clients’ wines.
At Tonelería Murúa, nothing is left to chance. We control every step of the process, from the origin and selection of raw materials to the final delivery to wineries. We work closely with winemakers, offering customized solutions such as adjusting the interior toasting of the barrels to suit the wine they will hold or choosing the most suitable type of oak.
Experience is key at Tonelería Murúa, where it takes five years to master the art of cooperage. This centuries-old craft has stood the test of time, and many are eager to learn about it.
That’s why our doors are open for wineries, enology students, and food industry students to visit our facilities and experience firsthand how we craft the barrels that have made us one of Europe’s leading cooperages.

This 2023, we celebrate our 150th anniversary—a very special year for us. A year filled with meaningful encounters, starting with our friends from Bodegas Izadi, whose commercial and marketing team visited us in mid-January. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Pablo Andrés, Carlos Ramilla, and Martí Roig, winemakers from the renowned Familia Torres, who came to explore our craftsmanship firsthand.

In recent weeks, we had the pleasure of welcoming César Torrijos, winemaker at Buil & Giné, who visited us alongside our sales representative in Catalonia, Jordi Castro.

We also had the pleasure of hosting Martí Magriñá and Joan Jarque, winemakers from Clos Pons and Clos de l’Obac.

From the University of León, we welcomed a group of thirty fourth-year students from the Food Science and Technology degree and third-year students from the Agricultural Engineering degree, specializing in Agri-Food. During their visit to our facilities, they had the opportunity to learn about every detail of our work, the barrel-making process, and how we have integrated cutting-edge technology into our cooperage, while still preserving traditional, artisanal, and manual craftsmanship.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming our friends from Bodegas Viñas del Jaro, who traveled from Pesquera de Duero (Valladolid) to Navarrete, recognizing the dedication and craftsmanship behind each barrel, which will play a crucial role in the aging of their wines.

And what a privilege it is to welcome visitors from beyond Spain, like our clients from Quinta do Vale da Perdiz, a family-owned Portuguese winery dedicated to producing high-quality wines, sharing a philosophy that resonates with us at Tonelería Murúa: “For those who know how to wait, everything arrives on time.” Their winemaking consultant, Manuel Ángel Areal, visited our cooperage to experience our craftsmanship firsthand.

From Villamediana de Iregua, we welcomed members of the Cerro San Cristóbal Tasting Club. They understand the influence of interior toasting on the aromas and character of wines, as well as the distinct nuances imparted by American and French oak barrels

And they have also had the opportunity to taste wines aged in Murúa barrels. Mauricio Lázaro, technical director of Bodegas Las Perdices in Mendoza, Argentina, and Carlos Rubio, manager of Bodegas Corral in Navarrete, visited our facilities to gain a deeper insight into our craftsmanship.

Years may pass, but at Tonelería Murúa, we remain true to our principles: staying at the forefront of innovation, ensuring the highest quality in every barrel we craft, from the careful selection of raw materials to the finest details of production, and, of course, providing the best service to our clients.
When we open our doors, we showcase our history and our craft. This year, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary, we take pride in the recognition we have earned within the wine industry. This acknowledgment has allowed us to work with clients in the world’s leading winemaking countries and across all Spanish Designations of Origin.
We want to continue listening to the industry, and these visits provide valuable feedback, helping us answer questions, strengthen relationships, and collaborate closely with wineries seeking the finest barrels for their wines. Together, we strive for excellence, blending tradition with innovation.
