In 1898, Justo Murúa founded one of the first cooperage industries in Europe. Tonelería Mecánica Riojana -Tonelería Murúa- is the realisation of a dream emerging from the knowledge acquired with French master cooper Jean Pineau, and his cooperage experience at Marqués de Riscal wineries. In 1920, the cooperage in Logroño was fitted with modern machinery, thus advancing from the traditional artisan manufacturing methods. With this major step forward, Justo Murúa became a visionary in the manner of understanding this business and the entire winemaking sector.
Donato Murúa, his son, goes one step beyond by achieving international recognition, with customers including the most prestigious Rioja wineries. When his wife, Pilar Revuelta, died, he decided to dedicate himself to the business and continue the founder’s dreams supported by the entire family. Today his granddaughter Elena, currently General Manager, is the one who loyally continues the principles that have driven the historical character of this cooperage: always moving forward, with the stringent quality standards that have set the company’s high standards and the best possible customer service.
