Since January Tonelería Murúa has been a member of AREF, the Riojan Association of Family Businesses. This decision could not have been otherwise, as the family values that have shaped Murúa since 1898 are common to those of many other companies in our autonomous community with which we now have the good fortune to share the same association.

AREF has a long history; it was created in 1996 and today there are 55 companies that make up the association. Together, each one in its own sector, we represent more than 8% of the GDP of La Rioja and employ more than two thousand people.

An Association that protects our history

Why is it important to join together? Because thanks to this we can continue to find synergies and collaborate to continue to grow and complete the story that our families began years ago.

In our case it was Don Justo Murúa, great-grandfather of the current manager Elena Ceca, who founded one of the first cooperage industries in Spain more than 120 years ago. His vision and passion have been inherited over the years and are still behind every process and every decision.

Maintaining this legacy involves great responsibility and the need to know how to adapt to change. Both are inherent aspects of any family business, so being able to share these concerns and problems but also new ideas and opportunities is one of the great benefits of being associated.

A new impetus for Tonelería Murúa

Another of the benefits is the protection provided by AREF, which helps us to preserve the continuity and quality of our services, always prioritising the interests of the family business and encouraging the collective search for solutions.

In addition to valuing and caring for the past of each firm, AREF promotes the present and the future. Those of Murúa will remain linked to innovation, sustainability and the quality and craftsmanship of our barrels. In this way, under the umbrella of the Association, we seek to continue contributing to the socio-economic development of La Rioja, developing good management practices and facilitating intergenerational changes as we have done so far.

Hand in hand with AREF, we will continue to fight and collaborate with the rest of the companies for our growth and survival, ensuring that stories that began to be written years ago continue to add chapters.

More about the Riojan Association of Family Businesses

The AREF was founded in 1996 as a non-profit association that aims to promote the value and visibility of family businesses in La Rioja.

In our community, 75% of the firms are family-owned and historical, so it is important to maintain their continuity and promote their growth, especially when the time comes to pass from one generation to the next.

The Association helps and advises on unique but everyday situations and problems faced by these firms. In addition, it also represents their interests and needs to other institutions.
