A JOURNEY TO THE ORIGIN OF OUR AMERICAN OAK WOOD
Since the beginning of Tonelería Murúa, 1898, it has always been a great responsibility to control the quality of the raw material in order to offer the best to the wineries.
Visits to our suppliers are constant throughout the year. From Pennsylvania to Missouri, we travel the Appalachian mountain range and check with the suppliers the wood that will become staves for barrels.
On this occasion, Antonio Gallardo, master cooper of Tonelería Murúa, accompanied Elena Ceca, manager of Tonelería Murúa, on one of her constant trips to the United States, to select and teach suppliers about the quality standards of the wood we need to make the best barrels.
A selection influenced by the colour, the grain, the type of cut or the mineral veins.
At Tonelería Murúa we look at everything. The colour of the wood, the type of grain, the mineral veins, the fibre, the type of cut, the machinery used by our suppliers in the sawmills, the types of soil where the oak trees grow, the climate, in other words, all the aspects that can influence the quality of the wood in the barrel and predict its future performance in the wine. We know that only through a good choice of wood can we create barrels that meet the high quality standards required for great wines.
In addition, we demand from our suppliers that the felling is done in a way that guarantees the sustainability of the forest, a requirement that is also obliged by the environmental regulations of each state.
By maintaining constant monitoring from the source, we can guarantee traceability from the forest to the finished barrel made to the customer’s specifications.
