On the 2nd of June, the Conference Strengthening the wine value chain, organised by the Wine Auxiliary Industry Association of La Rioja, took place at the Delicatto restaurant.

The association reflected on its fundamental role in the sustainable development of the region and how it can contribute to sustainability and circular economy, improving the image and reputation of wine companies, reducing costs and meeting the demand of consumers concerned about the environment.

Elena Ceca, President of the Association of the Auxiliary Wine Industry and Manager of Tonlería Murúa, emphasised all these issues and how the auxiliary wine industry plays a critical and crucial role in the production process. Not in vain, she reported that the Association is currently made up of 29 companies, has more than 1179 employees and a turnover of 215 million euros.

Collaboration between the ancillary industry and wineries is essential to maintain a constantly evolving winemaking tradition. Working together to find solutions for wine: innovations in capsules, tanks, cooperage, labels, chemical industry, software and digitalisation, transport and environmental services.

In addition to the profound environmental values and social responsibility to which the companies of the association are committed, there is also an international vocation and a commitment to the training of winemakers.

He also stressed that a good example of Tonelería Murúa’s commitment to sustainability is the new cooperage in Navarrete. Thanks to the insulating walls and roofs, plus the 282 solar panels installed, it has been possible to reduce network consumption by 20%-30%. SunMeet technology has also been installed to monitor and analyse where energy efficiency savings can be made, and lastly, a circular barrel system has been set up to recycle all barrels that have lost their properties and aromas, giving them a second life for distillates.
